Behind the Lens: Katie’s Quiet Vision – Capturing the Essence of Newborn Triplets

Cover Star Feature of Tinies Magazine, Babies - Aug 2025
In the premiere of our Photographer Feature series, Tinies Magazine Babies Issue sits down with Katie — the creative eye behind our August 2025 cover — to explore the delicate process of photographing newborn triplets, the quiet strength of stillness, and the inspiration that shapes her distinctive style.
Katie Bohmann
Amid the steady rhythm of the NICU and the beautiful chaos of raising six children, Katie has found a quiet space all her own — behind the lens. Based in Hayward, Wisconsin, she balances life as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with motherhood and the art of photography. For her, capturing newborns isn't just a creative outlet — it's a natural extension of the world she knows intimately: one where every moment is fleeting, fragile, and full of wonder.
Q: What drew you to specialising in newborn photography, and how has your style evolved over time?
Katie: I was drawn to newborn photography because there’s something profoundly meaningful about capturing life at its most delicate and fleeting. Moments filled with softness, stillness, and quiet wonder disappear in the blink of an eye — and I felt compelled to preserve them. My style over time has remained deeply rooted in simplicity: soft tones, natural textures, and a timeless approach that allows emotion to speak for itself. I’ve always strived to create images that feel real and reflect the love that lives on within a family.
Q: How do you decide or suggest a particular style, theme, or setup for each baby session?
Katie: I aim to keep my work visually cohesive, with a style that feels warm, grounded, and timeless. I’m naturally drawn to rustic elements, organic textures, and earth-toned palettes. When styling each session, I let those natural tones guide the mood, creating a soft and harmonious look that feels both intentional and effortless.
Q: How did you prepare differently for a triplet session compared to a single newborn shoot?
Katie: This was my very first triplet session — an experience I’ll never forget. It required a very different kind of preparation, starting with extra hands and plenty of patience. I had the support of my daughter, the grandma and the babies’ mother — all of us working together to feed, soothe, and assist when it came time to pose the babies together. With a single newborn, I rarely need much help beyond the occasional hand from a parent. But with three little ones, it truly became a team effort — and a beautiful one at that.

Q: How did you ensure each baby’s unique personality shines through while still capturing the bond between the three?
Katie: Having the babies close to one another brought a natural sense of comfort — even at just 11 weeks old, they seemed to recognise and respond to each other’s presence. Born premature, they had already shared so much, and that quiet connection translated beautifully on camera. Each baby brought their own calm energy to the session, and by allowing space for those little interactions, their unique personalities gently emerged — all while honoring the incredible bond between them.
Q: What was the biggest challenge during the shoot, and how did you overcome it?
Katie: Honestly, they did far better than I could have hoped —all three were calm, content, and beautifully in sync. The real challenge didn’t come during the session, but after. Posing and soothing three newborns is no small feat, and by the end of the day, I felt every bit of it. I was sore, tired — but completely fulfilled. It was one of those sessions that stays with you, not because it was perfect, but because it was meaningful.

Q: What has been your most rewarding moment as a newborn photographer so far?
Katie: For me, the most rewarding part has been the growth —both in my craft and in what each session continues to teach me. With every newborn I photograph, I learn something new, all while documenting one of the most fleeting and transformative stages of life. It’s a constant evolution, and one I feel grateful to be part of.
