Cover Star Feature of Tinies Magazine, Maternity - Sept 2025
There is a quiet poetry in maternity — in the grace of a changing form, the tender strength of waiting, and the luminous bond between mother and child before birth. For the premiere of our Photographer Feature series, Tinies Magazine Maternity Issue sits down with Katja — the creative force behind our September 2025 cover — to explore how she captures this profound season of life with stillness, sensitivity, and her signature artistic vision.
In this exclusive interview, we also hear from mother-to-be Lana, who shares her experience of working with Katja — how the session made her feel celebrated, confident, and radiant, and why this maternity shoot will remain such a deeply personal and cherished memory.

Katja Baron
With over a decade of experience, Katja has honed her craft as a portraitist of women, mothers, and families — creating images that feel at once timeless and unforgettable. As a mother of two, motherhood has sharpened her eye and deepened her empathy, driving her to preserve the fleeting chapters of pregnancy and family life. Her work is defined by an effortless blend of intimacy and elegance, capturing moments in a way that feels both natural and profoundly empowering.
Q: What drew you to specialising in maternity photography, and how has your style evolved over the years?
Katja: I was first drawn to maternity photography in pursuit of a strong studio aesthetic that blended fashion with pregnancy. At the time in the Netherlands, most portraits followed a standard white-background approach, but I envisioned something more powerful, more magazine-inspired. Over the years, my style has evolved into one that is clean, timeless, and fashion-driven — always rooted in elegance and emotion.
Q: How would you describe your photographic style, and what makes your work stand out?
Katja: I would describe my style as timeless, minimal, and deeply influenced by fashion. What sets my work apart is the way I see every woman — as though she belongs on the cover of a magazine — while still keeping each portrait personal, intimate, and warm.
Q: This issue features your work on the cover. What was the inspiration behind this shoot, and how did you bring that vision to life?
Katja: For this shoot, I wanted to capture a balance of strength and softness in a modern, editorial way. I kept the setting minimal, let the fabrics and light create movement and texture, and allowed the emotion of the moment to guide the frame.

Q: Your maternity shoot is a celebration of you. How did you showcase your personality, style, or story, and were there any special details that made the session uniquely yours?
LANA(Mumma to be): My maternity shoot with Katja was particularly special because it was the third time she had photographed my pregnancies. By now I completely trusted her and her team, so I was very open to all their ideas. That made the session feel very free and creative, and some of the best photos came out of that freestyle approach.

Q: Maternity photography is more than just aesthetics. How do you create an atmosphere where expecting mothers feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated?
Katja: I create a safe, welcoming space in the studio where expecting mothers can truly relax. I listen to their wishes, guide them gently, and remind them of the beauty they already carry. Together with my team, we make sure every woman leaves feeling confident, radiant, and celebrated.
Q: For mothers-to-be nervous about stepping in front of the camera, what would you say to help them feel confident and enjoy the experience fully?
LANA (Mumma to be): I would tell mothers-to-be to trust the process and allow themselves to be fully celebrated. You don’t need to know how to pose or look a certain way — the photographer will guide you. Once you let go, you’ll see just how beautiful you are, and experience the profound joy of capturing this extraordinary moment.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of photographing pregnancy, and what challenges do you face in this line of work?
Katja:The most rewarding moment is seeing a woman’s face light up when she truly sees herself in the photographs. The challenge lies in helping them move past insecurities—but guiding them through that transformation is also the most powerful and unforgettable part of my work.

Q: You work with a team of independent photographers. In what ways has this collaborative approach strengthened your work?
Katja: Working as a team makes us stronger. We inspire each other, share ideas and can offer more to our clients. The challenge is staying aligned, but the opportunity is that together we can grow much further than alone.
